I spend my week mostly alone, in a small office and dyeing space at my home. Outside of shouting at the squirrels, it's pretty quiet here. I listen to NPR in the mornings, then listen to music as I dye the day away. The music is a huge part of how I do what I do. Here's what's in the rotation this month:
- Polite Dance Song: Bird And the Bee
- Sugarfoot: Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybees (If you can sit still through this, SEE A DOCTOR NOW- there is something seriously wrong with you.)
- Little Plastic Castle: Ani DiFranco
- Lion In a Coma: Animal Collective (That's right, I am that hipster.)
- Collect Call: Metric
- Paranoia in B Major: The Avett Brothers
- This Year: The Mountain Goats
- Respect: Otis Redding (It seems like blasphemy that it isn't Aretha, but Otis sings the hell out of every song he never wrote.)
- Bratislava: Beirut
- You Don't Know Me: Ben Folds
- Me Gustas Cuando Callas: Brazilian Girls
- The Ghost Inside Our House: Cloud Cult
- Love This Life: Crowded House
- O Valencia: The Decemberists
- Pretty In Pink: The Dresden Dolls
- V Neck Sweater: Greyboy Allstars
- Instant Pleasure: Rufus Wainwright (Note to self: do not accidentally play this around 14- year- old daughter. She will find it distressingly amusing and repeatedly request you burn her a copy.)
- Evil: Howlin' Wolf (What is with that line about another mule kicking in your stall?!)
- Boy With A Coin: Iron And Wine
- Home and Dry: Pet Shop Boys
- Get Better: Mates Of State
- M79/ Oxford Comma: Vampire Weekend (Proof that even bands with sucky, sucky names can rock.)
- Red House: Jimi Hendrix
- Our Hell: Emily Haines
- I Just Want To Make Love To You: Muddy Waters
- The District Sleeps Alone Tonight: The Postal Service
- They Are Night Zombies!! They Are Neighbors!! They Have Come Back From the Dead!! Ahhh!: Sufjan Stevens (And sometimes it really is all about the title. I'd love this song even if it wasn't completely awesome.)
What are you listening to these days?
